Styling Your Photo Session And Why It's Important

Simply Styled

Photo sessions are an event and should be dressed as such! It is a special day, and outfits are a big part of it! As your family photographer, I am creating artistic imagery with the combination of your family, your location, and your styling matter! These all play a major factor in creating beautiful art. You don’t have to be dressed uncomfortable or be inauthentic to have a styled photo session. This is about you and your family, and I want you to feel comfy, and true to yourselves! You don’t have to purchase new clothing either! There are many ways to style a family for family photo’s, and we can keep it as simple or as detailed as possible, and either one works!! As your family photographer, I will develop an understanding of what your family style is like, what your home vibe is, and what color tones are your favorites, and from there, we will create a look that best speaks for your family! Let’s discuss the Do’s and Don’ts of styling a family photo session!

The Do’s, Just DO it

Timeless and classic pieces are always a do:

-Long, flowy simple dresses (these dresses tend to catch wind in them which adds texture and movement to your photographs).

-baby rompers, overalls, jump suits are a BIG YES for the little ones.

-neutral tones- ivory, browns, caramels, khaki, soft pinks, mauves

-lace, crochet, or any textures

-soft florals

-fedoras

-suspenders

-blazers

-small and delicate bows

-mixing patterns (it’s not only ok, but it looks really amazing if you mix patterns and it’s done the right way)

-cool button downs

-open face sweaters layered over shirts

The Don’ts…..Don’t Do It!

The reason these don’t do it’s are so important, is because they actually distract from the subjects of the photo-aka YOU! There aren’t many, but they are very important to avoid when styling your family photos.

-Watches

-Sunglasses (unless you are bringing sunglasses for the kids to take a few fun photos).

-Logo’s or wording- “GAP”, “POLO”, or any other words, or a big “POLO” logo, or any other logo. It’s a BIG NOPE. When these are on a shirt, it is very distracting in photographs. Your eye will go straight to these words and it actually takes away from the subject.

- Everyone Matching- really…. don’t do this. Unless you want to look like you in a family photo from 1993.
